The best hair colors for hiding gray

It’s clear that we can’t make gray disappear for good, but we can disguise it with a smart hair color. Discover which are the ideal shades that offer results that are both beautiful and longer-lasting.

Hair color for gray

There’s no miracle product that will prevent gray, nor a method to slow down its growth. There are hair color shades that disguise gray better than others but the best option is to go for a color that’s similar to our natural base. As you may already have heard, blondes are lucky when it comes to gray. It’s easier to disguise gray roots when hair is a light shade. However, when hair is dark, it’s harder to hide its appearance. The most common mistake among brunettes is to go blonde at the first sign of gray, believing that this way they could wait out for longer before the next salon visit, but in fact it’s the opposite, as dark roots will appear in just a few weeks. This is why, we recommend using your own base color, or up to one to two tones lighter, to disguise gray. Only when gray becomes largely predominant should we consider an extreme color change.

Color-treated hair care

If we want the selected tone covering our gray to last longer, it’s essential to keep our hair in great condition, to keep our hair well conditioned and nourished and avoid the constant use of hot styling tools to prevent cuticle damage. This way, we can keep hair color bright and shiny for longer. The day of the salon color application we can boost results with a color seal, condition and shine treatment which will make sure the color lasts even longer.

Hair color type

We recommend visiting your salon every month to month and a half to allow your hair some time to breathe and so as not to saturate it with color. Your hair grows an average on one 0,40 inches a month but it varies from person to person. Hair color type will depend on the age and quantity of gray of that particular person. If you’re over thirty we recommend you try permanent hair color which penetrates the hair shaft and covers any gray 100%. It will also last longer than any other type of hair color. If you’re finding your very first gray hairs, then an alternative is a color rinse, ideal for covering gray under 30%. This type of color contains no ammonia, which means that your hair is less exposed to chemicals. On those odd occasions when we don’t have time to go to the salon, we can use a gray cover spray. This is useful as an emergency solution for disguising white hairs when we’re in between salon visits.
