Bye-bye perfection and hello layers!

It’s the time of the natural look with a young and laid-back feel. We check out the style that won its popularity in the 70s and 90s; the shaggy cut. The meaning of the term shaggy is dishevelled or scruffy and it’s set to become a big haircut hit in 2019. This year we’re reviving the short layered cuts that became so popular in the seventies and nineties thanks to the likes of Rachel of Friends fame (played by Jennifer Anniston). More and more celebrities are opting for this casual looking trend. Taylor Swift, Sarah Hyland, Milla Jovovich and Anne Hathaway are just some of the stars parading this new style down the red carpet. Want to know what it’s all about? Then keep reading.

What is the shaggy cut?

The hair is cut into short layers with the volume focused on the top of the head. It can be cut with scissors or a blade to get uneven length strands which add texture and a laid-back, young and fresh feel. Originally, it would have been combined with long, choppy bangs, but if you prefer a clear forehead, you can always opt for smaller layers combed to one side.

The cut aims to create a natural and young feel, as if the hair has been left to dry naturally, creating that “shaggy” finish. If you combine the cut with some balayage highlights from one to two shades lighter than your natural base then you will have the perfect combination. These will give your hair added light, enhanced depth and movement. Wear it in loose waves for even greater texture and to get the hottest look of the moment, especially if your hair is straight.

It’s ideal for thick hair where the aim is to reduce volume and create a younger look that’s comfortable and fresh. On the other hand, it’s also useful for fine hair to add greater volume, although stylists will have to cut layers strategically to get that finish. In these cases, we recommend using Curl Foam from the Pro·Line range (with thermo-active properties and 3 types of keratin which protect, repair and hydrate) and drying hair upside down. Although it’s designed to suit shoulder-length hair, it can also look good on longer manes. The same goes for hair texture. The layers will look great whether you have straight or curly hair and if you don’t believe us just check out how good actress Zendaya looks with this haircut. corte-mujer-shaggyIf we take into consideration face shape, the shaggy cut suits best long or oval faces, as it acts to balance out volume. If, on the other hand, your face is round with a pronounced forehead then you’d best forget this cut. Layers should be longer, to cheek length and then cut progressively to balance out volume.
