The perfect pompadour exists and we show you how to get it right!

The pompadour is one of the most emblematic and timeless hairstyles for men. Getting the “rebel without a cause” look is much easier than you think and, if you don’t believe it then just follow our tips to get the pompadour spot on. Male hairdressing is on the up. More and more men who care about the way they look visit their trusted barber for an image update. The pompadour is, without a doubt, one of the kings of the male haircut and has been for many years. Why is it so popular? The key to its success lays with the fact that it’s a versatile hairstyle with a masculine, rock-star, rebellious edge which makes it so much more attractive. The look follows the basic mantra of cutting the short shor and leaving the long long (including sideburns). So basically we’re looking to keep the sides short and the top long. If you still haven’t given this cut a go and you want to try it out then there are 5 basic aspects you should keep in mind to achieve the perfect pompadour:

The perfect length

It’s the first step to satisfactory results. The cut should be progressive, starting off short at the neck and then, as we make our way towards the forehead it should become gradually longer, somewhere between 5 and 10 cm and we recommend working the sides with a blade to get the texture right. Do you have curly hair? Not to worry, the pompadour is for you too. Curls will give your pompadour more movement and volume.

Styling

The trick for getting your pompadour to stay in place for hours lays in the styling. Take a comb and split the bangs area into two sections, comb towards the center and then back away from the face. Then style the central section upwards and the sides back. As you will see, volume is the essence of this look. To get volume, during the preparation phase try to give your hair as much volume as you can. Dry it gently with a towel in a front-to-back motion. If your hair is long enough and you want an XL pompadour then we suggest you dry your hair with your head upside down and use your fingers to comb.

Added volume

To get a good finish it’s important to give the style consistency. We recommend Volume Mousse from the Pro·Line range, a mousse formulated with hyaluronic acid which lifts the root, even on fine hair, without leaving unwanted residues. Apply to damp hair especially to the front area around the forehead, then shape with your fingers. Try to spread the product evenly right to the tips and once that’s done work your fingers through to open out the hair and create extra volume.

The hair dryer

Shape your pompadour with a hair dryer and give it a personal touch. Here, we suggest that if you have a round face you’ll want to add height to the center of the head. If your face shape is long then you’ll want to shape slightly to one side. If you want to you can use a round-tipped brush for blow-drying on a hot air setting.

Finish

Now it’s time for the finishing touch! You’ll need to hold the pompadour in place, especially if you have fine hair. You can use our Styling Dust from the updated Homme range.
