How to protect your hair from the sun

Yes, in the summer our hair gets burnt too. The sun, together with sea water, chlorine and wind, can be a dangerous cocktail for our hair’s health. If you want to make sure yours survives all summer long then don’t miss our top tips. Sunbathing in moderation and always applying a sunscreen, shouldn’t just be mantra for your skin, but for your hair too. Although it’s true that hair looks great in the sunshine, overexposure can not only burn your scalp and hair, but can also cause breakages and leave it weak and porous. And what about the disastrous effects it can have on your hair color, leaving it dull and lighter than you’d like.   If you add to the sun the other elements usually associated with the summer season, like wind, salt water, pool chlorine and sand, you’ve got a recipe for a hair disaster. This combination can alter your skin’s hydro-lipidic layer and leave it dry, rough and dull and your hair weak and difficult to manage. If we look at each element separately we find that sea salt dehydrates the hair and that, together with sand can irritate the scalp and cause itching. Chlorine damages melanin, eliminating and degrading hair color. Wind, on the other hand, accentuates dehydration. All of these factors together produce an alteration of the hair’s natural keratin, which leaves it in a more fragile state.

How can I prevent sun damage?

It’s important that in the months leading up to summer we use conditioners to revitalize the hair. We should introduce a highly nourishing mask into our routine such as Deep Impact Plus from the Keratin Shot range, which leaves hair extremely soft, radically shiny and provides multi-level hair repair. We also recommend the use of oils such as Arganology, a natural blend of argan and cotton oil which restores shine, softness and brightness. Its formula revitalizes and strengthens damaged hair and leaves it velvety soft. During the summer months, ideally specific products should be used to protect the hair from the sun and preserve the hair fiber. Salerm 21 Bi-phase is the ideal summer product. It’s a dual-effect spray with long-lasting UV filter. On the one hand, it protects the hair fiber and color from sun exposure, chlorine and salt water, and on the other it instantly conditions, repairs and untangles hair leaving it soft, shiny and frizz-free. The first phase of the product protects the hair fiber, its keratin and the hair’s color from sun exposure. It also enhances shine and brightness and has an anti-brassiness effect. The product’s UV filter is also contained in this phase. The second phase is responsible for conditioning, repairing, de-tangling and eliminating frizz in an instant. Don’t forget to use a mask! Especially if your hair is curly, porous or prone to frizz. In this case, we let you in on a little tip that works wonders. Make the most of your visits to the beach or pool by applying Wheat Germ Mask from roots to ends. Put your hair up into a high bun and leave the mask on to work until you get home. The heat will help the product to penetrate much better. If you take a dip, don’t forget to reapply.

What next?

When the summer is over your hair will be more damaged and drier than normal. Do you’re going to need some intense nutrition to get back its soft and shiny appearance. We recommend you visit your Salerm Cosmetics salon to get our hydrating treatment Keratin Shot which, thanks to its hydrolyzed keratin, provides intensive repair and hydration. If you want its effects to last even longer, there’s a maintenance kit available which includes a Maintenance Shampoo, Deep Impact Plus Mask and Hydrating Serum.
